Walters

Dr. Timothy L. Walters, 65, of Slippery Rock Township died about 12:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Born in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, July 26, 1942, he was the son of the late George Alfred and Lois Eileen Palmer Walters.

He was a 1960 graduate of Jackson High School, Jackson, Ohio. He received his associate degree from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, and master's degree from Ball State University. He received his doctorate degree from the University of Illinois. His post-doctoral work was at Ohio State University, West Virginia University and Fairleigh-Dickinson University.

He began his teaching career in Ohio public schools in Cleveland, Mount Gilead and Jackson City. He taught speech, English and directed plays.

He was professor emeritus from Slippery Rock University, retiring in 1997. At SRU, he taught in the Department of Communication, formerly the Department of Speech and Theatre. He directed many musical productions and was instrumental in the university's production of the Madrigal Christmas Dinners. He was among the first to be recognized with The President's Award for Outstanding Service at the university.

He co-authored a textbook titled "Communication Concepts." He initiated publication production, the first graphic design class of the major. He was an exchange professor at the IFK Language Institute, Salzburg, Austria. He was also an exchange professor at Kangwon National University in Chunchon, South Korea, and a visiting professor at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, Scotland.

During retirement, he was a popular instructor with the Institute for Learning in Retirement. He also was active in teaching English as a second language at international locations, including Woo Song University, Daejon, South Korea, and Kangwon National University, Chunchon, South Korea. He was involved with the New Castle Playhouse.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for more than 50 years. He received the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth in 1987. He was a member of the executive board of the Moraine Trails Council. He attended three International Jamborees in the United States, the Republic of South Korea and the Netherlands. He served on the commissary staff for 7 National Jamborees, which were at Moraine State Park and at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia M. Brown Walters, whom he married Nov. 20, 1966; and two sons, Christopher P. Walters of Slippery Rock and David "Max" and his wife, Jennifer Walters, of Pittsburgh. He was the stepfather of Robert L. Foster of Oak Hill, Ohio.

Walters, who died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, will be observed at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008, at The Preston Center at Camp Bucoco, 150 Bucoco Lane, Slippery Rock, with the Rev.
