Hillard

Charles E. Hillard, 93, of Ormond Beach, Fla., formerly of Karns City, died at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday at the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., following a period of failing health.

Born in Edgewood, Allegheny County, on Oct. 14, 1914, he was a son of James K. and Ruth Watt Hillard.

He was a graduate of the Fairview Township-Karns City High School in 1932. He graduated from Grove City College in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, from Pennsylvania State University in 1941 with a Master of Arts Degree and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957 with a Doctor of Education Degree.

He started teaching in Karns City High School in 1936 and served for a number of years as its principal. During that time, he served on a number of accrediting committees of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary schools.

He served for three years in the Medical Department of the Army during World War II and was discharged with the rank of first lieutenant. He remained in the Inactive Reserves for a number of years.

After his retirement in 1974, Dr. Hillard took courses to qualify as an emergency medical technician and taught classes in advanced first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the American Red Cross for a number of years.

He also was a volunteer at Butler Memorial Hospital for a time. He was a member of the Fairview United Presbyterian Church where he at various times served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the board of trustees, the Session, church treasurer and pastoral nominating committee. He was also secretary treasurer of the Bear Creek Cemetery Association for a time and belonged to the National Retired Teachers Association.

In 1981, he married Betty Irwin Parker, who survives, and in 1995 the couple moved to Ormond Beach, Fla.

Also surviving are two step- daughters, Judith Parker of Charlotte, N.C., and Mrs. Ruth Ramiriz of Homestead, Fla.; one former step-daughter-in- law, Patricia O'Bannon and her husband, Patrick, of Port Orange, Fla.; step-grandchildren, Tiffany Parker of Port Orange, Fla., Lauren Gumer of Miami, Daniel and Robert Gumer, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Madeline Gumer of Ocala, Fla., and Jessica Parker of Gainesville, Fla; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Colhouer; and one stepson, Bruce E. Parker.

Hillard, who died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia, with retired Presbyterian pastor Richard F. Rowe presiding.
