PITTSBURGH
Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh is starting a Geriatric Trauma Institute because a disproportionate number of the area's aging population needs emergency trauma treatment.
Nationwide, about 12 percent of the population is 65 or older, but in Allegheny County it's 17 percent.
Dr. Aurelio Rodriguez, who will turn 65 next year, said about one in five of the hospital's emergency room patients is elderly and nearly three out of four of those come to the hospital because of a fall.
Rodriguez will head the institute, which will focus on the special needs of older trauma victims.
Among other things, older patients are more likely to have pre-existing conditions that could affect how they're treated ranging from diabetes to osteoporosis to being on blood-thinning medicine.
Chatham University is the most land rich college in Allegheny County now that it has been given the 388-acre Eden Hall Farm. The Eden Hall Foundation announced the gift on Thursday. Chatham officials said they will develop a new campus on the farm. The farm used to be the summer home of Sebastian Mueller, senior vice president of the H.J. Heinz Co. It was also used as a health resort for the ketchup company's female employees. The farm was a memorial for Mueller's two daughters, who died when they were still children.
