Family of 7 escapes as fire destroys home

All seven members of the Connors family escaped unharmed early Wednesday morning when flames consumed their home in St. Petersburg, Clarion County.

A trash pickup employee called 911 after seeing flames at the 2½-story house at the corner of Keating and Church streets in the borough at 1:22 a.m.

Chief Mike Sheakley of the St. Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department said it took 11 hours to bring the blaze under control, during which the intersection was shut down.

"It was a double-boarded home, and the fire was in the walls. It was terrible," Sheakley said.

The Red Cross is helping Mark Connors along with his wife and five children, according to Sheakley. The home was a total loss.

Fire departments from Foxburg, Parker, Callensburg, Perry Township and Knox assisted St. Petersburg.

Sheakley said the home was fully engulfed in flames when the first fire trucks arrived, and firefighters used water from both hydrants and tanker trucks to fight the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
