SRU baseball gets PSAC playoff bid

The Slippery Rock University baseball team earned a PSAC playoff berth by defeating host Clarion 7-1 and 23-7 in a doubleheader sweep Saturday.

The Rock (25-21, 12-8) tied California (Pa.) for third place in the conference standings, but won the tiebreaker with its 2-2 record over runner-up Indiana (Pa.).

SRU never trailed in either game, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning in Game 1 and six runs in the opening frame in the nightcap.

Matt Adams went 7-for-9 in the twinbill with seven RBI, including a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning in Game 2, when SRU scored 11 times.

Rich Michalek and M.J. Parsons had four hits apiece. Bill Herman (Grove City High) had three hits and five RBI and Dan Hudeck added three hits and an RBI and Matt Messer had a three-run homer.

Don Pugliese tossed a complete game in the opener while Brett Vescovi, replacing an injured Vince Lloyd after two batters, earned the win while throwing just 1 2/3 innings. Mike DeCola (Slippery Rock High) pitched the final 5⅓ innings to earn the save.

SRU will face PSAC-East champion Millersville (22-24, 12-8) in the upcoming opening round playoffs in Lancaster.

Lisa Getgen pitched a two-hit shutout in Game 1 of Saturday's PSAC-West doubleheader at California (Pa.) to give the squad a school-record 27th win of the season.The Rock (27-15, 7-13) won 8-0 in the opener before the Vulcans won 7-0 in the nightcap, allowing just three hits to SRU.

Fifth-ranked California (Pa.) handed 23rd-ranked SRU (20-3) a 5-0 setback Saturday in the championship match of the PSAC Team Championships.

Six Rock female athletes won first-place honors at the Carnegie Mellon University Senior Meet Saturday.Jennifer Hansen won the pole vault with a school-record 13-2¼ and was runner-up in the long jump.Brittany Little (3,000), Whitney Hendershot (high jump), Serena Bond (triple jump), Jessica Koerner (hammer throw) and Rachel Weber (shot put) were the other winners.Terrece Draper won the triple jump (46-10) and Tim Tray the pole vault (15-11¾) to highlight the men's effort.
