NEW YORK — Michigan tackle Jake Long sat back and smiled from the outset of the NFL draft on Saturday, having already signed with the Miami Dolphins as the top overall choice. He inked a five-year contract worth $57.75 million, $30 million of it guaranteed.

St. Louis selected Chris Long of Virginia second, Matt Ryan of Boston College then went to Atlanta, Darren McFadden of Arkansas was taken by Oakland, Glenn Dorsey of national champion LSU was picked by Kansas City and Vernon Gholston of Ohio State landed with the New York Jets.

When the draft was done on Sunday, a record 33 trades were made during the weekend as NFL teams tried to assemble winning rosters for the 2008 season and beyond.

AVENTURA, Fla. — Annika Sorenstam won the Stanford International Pro-Am for her 71st LPGA Tour victory, beating Paula Creamer with a par on the first playoff hole.With considerable help from Creamer 69), Sorenstam (70) erased a one-hole deficit in the final two holes of regulation. They finished at 8 under.Sorenstam won for the 16th time in 22 playoff appearances.

KANSAS CITY, Kan.— Dan Wheldon held off Tony Kanaan to win his second straight IRL IndyCar Series race at Kansas Speedway.It was the 14th career victory for Wheldon, a former series champion, but the first time he has taken a checkered flag since winning on the 1.5-mile Kansas track a year ago.Danica Patrick, who last week became the first woman to win an IndyCar race, never got into contention in the RoadRunner Turbo Indy 300 and left the race with a broken wheel hub.
