Rock softball ties win mark
The Slippery Rock University softball team swept a PSAC West doubleheader from Clarion 5-4 and 6-1 Friday to tie the school record for single-season wins.
Lisa Getgen picked up the win in Game 2 after earning a save in the opener and hit a three-run homer in the second game. Sheree Horvath went 3-for-4 in the first game, including a home run and a double.
Shardea Croes, Jessica Ellebruch and Meghan McHenry had two hits each for SRU (26-14, 6-12).
In the nightcap, Getgen and Jordan Zeunges had two hits each in the nine-hit output.
Host SRU split Friday's twinbill with Clarion, losing the first game 7-6 after trailing 7-1, then picking up a 4-1 victory.In Game 1, Scott Bender had a home run, a single and scored twice, Dan Hudeck had two doubles and two RBI, and M.J. Parsons had three hits and three RBI for SRU.In the nightcap, Rich Michalek went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Bender added a triple and an RBI.Entering Saturday's doubleheader at Clarion, The Rock (23-21, 10-8) trails co-leaders California (Pa.) and Shippensburg by two games and third-place Indiana (Pa.) by one game.The top three teams in the division at the end of Saturday's action earn PSAC playoff berths.
The 23rd-ranked Rock defeated host Bloomsburg 5-1 in semifinal action Friday at the PSAC Championships.SRU (20-2) will play fifth-ranked California (Pa.) Saturday in the championship match.Kayla Blackburn, Samantha Blackburn and Jessica Hilborn each won a singles match and pulled out wins in doubles matches.
