Niggel

Joan G. Niggel, 83, formerly of Autumn Drive died at 3:45 p.m. Monday at the Stow-Glen Healthcare Center, Stow, Ohio.

Born Sept. 27, 1924, in Butler, she was the daughter of Francis A. and Blanche A. Green Kappeler. She was a 1941 graduate of Butler High School.

Prior to her retirement, she was an executive assistant for Health Systems Agency Southwest Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh and Butler Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Niggel was a member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Butler. She had offices in the American Red Cross, the YWCA, the Greater Federation of Women's Clubs, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Butler Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She received the Clara Barton Award from the American Red Cross in 1996, and in 1998 the YWCA named her as Woman of the Year.

Surviving are one son, Louis V. Niggel, Jr. and his wife, Jocelyn, of Williston, Vt.; one daughter, Patricia S. Widdows, and her husband, Richard, of Munroe Falls, Ohio; two brothers, Robert F. Kappeler of Butler and John T. Kappeler of Lady Lake, Fla; one sister, Phyllis M. Kappeler of Butler; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Her husband, Louis V. Niggel, who she married June 18, 1945, preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1994.

Cunningham St.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St. The Rev. Pierre Falkenhan, pastor, will officiate.
