Franklin Twp. man gored by cow

FRANKLIN TWP — A runaway Texas longhorn charged and gored a man doing yard work Sunday afternoon at his home on West Old Route 422, authorities said.

Roy "Doug"Weyand, 50, was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with injuries not considered life threatening. His condition was not known this morning.

Troopers several hours later shot and killed the longhorn cow after being unable to corral the animal.

The cow, which like a bull has horns that can stretch more than 6 feet tip to tip, had recently been bought by owner Gerald Rumburg Jr., who also owns several other Longhorns.

The animal was delivered Sunday to Rumburg's farm on Country Club Road in Franklin Township and possibly became spooked, authorities said.

Rumburg could not be reached for comment this morning.

The longhorn cow bolted through a fence and out the pasture; it ran for about one mile to Weyand's mobile home.

Weyand about 3:45 p.m. was raking leaves, said Chief Frank Wilson of the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department, and the longhorn attacked the man.

Police said the victim was gored in the abdomen. He was able to run into nearby woods until the animal left.

Wilson had heard the call on his police scanner and went to Weyand's home to offer help. Ambulance paramedics were already tending to him.

"(Weyand) was conscious and alert and was able to tell the medics what happened,"Wilson said.

At least one of the cow's horns apparently struck Weyand's stomach area, Wilson said, but he did not see any puncture wounds.

"He was having stomach pain but I didn't see any blood,"Wilson said. "It looked like a rug burn."

Troopers chased the animal for 4 miles before it was fatally shot in a field on Eagle Mill Road, off Route 422 near the Connoquenessing-Franklin Township line.
