BUTLER TWP — Having seen North Allegheny take its first lead of the game midway through the second half, the Butler girls lacrosse team got back to basics.

That seemed to lead to the Tigers' undoing.

Butler scored three unanswered goals over the final 10 minutes to post a 7-5 victory at Butler Intermediate High School Thursday.

North Allegheny had just scored a pair of goals to take a 5-4 lead before the Tornado's run to close out the game.

"I think we just cleaned up our game a little," said Butler coach Annie Succop. "We played a little more in control, like we did in the first half.

"We kind of ran our offense like we practiced it. We just started getting goals,"Succop added.

Butler (2-4), coming off a tough 15-9 loss to North Hills Tuesday, started off with an offensive flurry, but the goaltending abilities of freshman Nia Parillo kept her Tigers in the game.

The Tornado scored just 50 seconds into the game when Chelsey Rock, standing in front of the goal, fired a shot past Parillo, who made nine saves in the first half.

"She played phenomenal," said Tigers coach Karyn Brooks. "She's an amazing keeper."

Parillo made several key stops in those first seven minutes. Plus, a Sara Schweiger shot two minutes later that almost increased the Tornado lead hit the post.

However, the Tigers (4-7) finally got their first push into the Butler end 7:30 into the half and Brenna Curti took advantage on a shot past freshman goalie Kara Moses to tie the game.

Butler retook the lead three more times, only to have the Tigers tie the game.

Schweiger scored with 15:34 left in the first half before the Tigers' Emma Luitgarden put the ball in the net 1:23 later. Butler's Becca Crissman tallied a goal with 10:17 left in the first half, only to see NA's Kellie Roach knot the game with 6:35 remaining before the break.

Rock opened the scoring in the second half with 15:47 remaining and Curti countered 33 seconds later.

Both players received penalty shots when both were inadvertently struck in the face while attempting shots.

The Tigers took their first lead when Luitgarden scored with 11:51 remaining and looked to be gaining momentum.

"We knew it would be a tough game," said Brooks. "We're (both) battling for third and fourth place in the section and knew it would be a good match."

Crissman scored the equalizer with 9:22 left and Butler almost regained the lead 15 seconds later, but Rock's shot hit the post.

Still, the Tornado kept coming and Schweiger netted her second goal of the game with 8:43 remaining.

When Brittany Miller, the Tornado's fourth different scorer of the evening, buried a goal with 4:56 remaining, the Tornado enjoyed their biggest lead and made it stand with solid passing and clock management.

"We have a lot of girls who can score," said Succop. "If one scorer has a bad night, someone else can score for us."

The Tornado play today at Shady Side Academy.

"This game (against NA) gives us a lot of confidence to win these close games," said Succop.
