Rock splits pair with Mansfield

Slippery Rock University's baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday at Critchfield Park, defeating Mansfield 16-5 in the first game and dropping a 10-9 decision in eight innings in the nightcap.

The Rock (15-13) scored nine runs in the first inning of Game 1 as Scott Bender had a single and double in the opening frame.

Sean Holliday was the winning pitcher, benefitting from an 18-hit attack. Bender and Scott Hugney had three hits each.

SRUadded another 12 hits in Game 2 and scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the contest, only to lose in the eighth.

Craig Misiewicz, The Rock's sixth pitcher of the game, took the loss. Billy Messer and Rich Michalek had three hits each for The Rock.

SRU, 4-4 in PSAC West play, travels to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. doubleheader today before hosting the Bald Eagles in a 1 p.m. twinbill Saturday.

Women's Tennis

Ranked 23rd in the country, SRUrolled to a 9-0 win over Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday.

SRU (16-1) won the match despite the absence of No. 1 singles and doubles player Kayla Blackburn and her sister, No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles player Samantha, who missed the match after the death of their mother Monday.

The Rock received wins from Casey Runyan at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0), Lara Rizzi at No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-0) and Christina Rhodes at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-1).
