WARRENDALE — Seneca Valley's potent offense finally showed some life in the third period.

But it proved to be too little, too late.

The Raiders received a goal from Tyler Mesisca with 3:30 remaining in the third period, cutting Bethel Park's lead to 2-1.

But the Black Hawks held off SV for a one-goal victory in a PIHL Class AAA quarterfinal game Thursday night at BladeRunners

SV averaged 4.5 goals per game before Thursday's meeting.

"We kept battling," said Raiders coach Mike Schall. "A bounce here or there the other way and it may have been different."

Bethel Park (14-5-2) received a first-period goal from Chris Mandia and Ryan Nunez added insurance with a tally at 3:19 left in the second period.

The Raiders forced Bethel Park goalie Ben Garcia to make nine saves in the first 30 minutes of play, but Garcia saved his best saves for the third period.

Mesisca's goal came after Garcia made an initial stop on Matt Jarrett's slap shot, but the puck trickled in front of the goalie for Mesisca to clean up.

Joe Sasala also was credited with an assist on the score.

"I thought Ben played well," Black Hawks coach Jim McVay said. "The one goal he gave up was sort of a fluke. But you give up just one goal, that's a pretty good night."

Despite being hampered by a pair of two-minute penalties in the final period, SV (15-5-1) managed six other shots on Garcia besides the one that found the net, all of them coming in the final 10:09.

Seneca Valley goalie Ryan Schutte made 12 saves on the night. He was pulled with 45 seconds left to give the Raiders a sixth skater.

Many of the Raiders' scoring chances earlier in the game went by without Garcia having to make a save.

With 10:33 left in the second period, Bethel Park found itself on the short end of a 2-on-1 when Jarrett skated down the left side and found Mesisca streaking toward the net with a centering pass.

But the puck slid under Mesisca's stick before he took Garcia off of his skates and the net off of its moorings.

Later in the period, John Raymus charged toward the net from the right and let a wrist shot go, but the puck sailed over Garcia's head.

It was just 13 seconds later that Nunez scored to put the Black Hawks up 2-0.

The Raiders went 0-for-3 on the power play.

"We had 30 or 31 power play goals this season," said Schall. "We definitely had a couple of golden opportunities, but they shut us down."

The Raiders defeated Bethel Park 4-1 Jan. 4.

"We had four or five key players out in that game," said McVay. "They also beat us in a tournament, but the regular season game, they dominated us here with some of our players out."
