I appreciate the recent exchange here regarding the subsidizing of persons in need, some more deserving than others. I'd like to submit that, after many, many years of helping family members to such a degree that they came to rely on me for their very sustenance, as a result I suffered such enormous setbacks of my own that it forced me to finally open my eyes. I had become an enabler. It's one thing to help a disadvantaged person get a leg up, but quite another to support people who make no meaningful attempt to stand on their own. I gave until it hurt, even when I vehemently disagreed with the lifestyles of some of the beneficiaries of my giving. I thought that, for one, we should take care of our own, and for another, my help would avail them of better opportunities so they could become self-sufficient. But I caution everyone that there is such a thing as generosity to a fault. I liken it to depleting onesself by repeatedly giving one's own blood to someone who refuses to quit shooting themselves in the foot. At some point, we have to focus on our own survival.
