John Lehnerd, a resident of the Douglasville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Douglasville, Ga., recently obtained medals he had earned during World War II.Lehnerd was a first lieutenant with the 30th Infantry Division in the European Theater and was awarded two Purple Hearts and several additional medals.After years of misunderstandings between Lehnerd and government personnel, his nieces and nephews stepped in.The result was that on Jan. 12, his 88th birthday, he was presented with his Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Purple Heart with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one silver service star, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp, Combat Infantry Badge First Award, Belgian Fourragers, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, Expert Badge with Carbine Bar with Rifle Bar and Sharpshooter Badge with Pistol Bar.
