PITTSBURGH — Don't tell Andrea McQueen she needs help with her anger management.

She handled it just fine Wednesday.

Two hours after the Freeport senior was unable to defend her 100-yard freestyle title from last year, McQueen redeemed herself by taking first in the 100 breaststroke at the WPIAL Class AA championships at Pitt's Trees Pool.

The win came in a time of 1 minute, 7.39 seconds, or .59 seconds faster than her previous career best.

"She was very determined to win the breaststroke after her first race of the day," said Freeport coach Gregg McQueen. "She was disgusted about placing second in the 100 freestyle."

"I used the anger I had after not winning the freestyle to help me win the breast," Andrea McQueen said. "I was disappointed, but the freestyle is done and over with. I'm still going home happy."

McQueen was in fourth place in the freestyle event after 50 yards before rebounding to place second with a time of 53.5, less than three-tenths of a second behind Shady Side Academy's Margaux Georgiadis.

It was the exact opposite last season for McQueen, who won the 100 freestyle and was runner-up in the breaststroke in 2007.

Coming in right behind McQueen in the breaststroke Wednesday was Knoch's Rachel Tano at 1:07.58.

Tano, a junior, also placed second in Tuesday's 200 individual medley.

"She put an awesome effort into both events," said Knoch coach Stephanie Karwoski. "She's a very versatile swimmer and can swim all the strokes."

Mars managed another very strong day with a sixth-place finish from Rachel Szymkowiak in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.92) and a fifth-place effort from its 400 freestyle relay team of Szymkowiak, Gabri Pierre, Chloe Pierre and Courtney Shields (3:45.63).

Szymkowiak placed fifth in the butterfly event on Tuesday.

"We're hoping she makes states in (the butterfly and breaststroke)," said Planets coach Heidi Brandon. "We'll find out on Tuesday."

Freeport's Gail Erickson also could end up in the PIAA meet after placing fifth in the 100 backstroke.

All three area girls teams finished well in the team standings: Mars was fifth, Freeport tied for sixth and Knoch placed 11th.

Boys

Knoch senior Matt Mahan turned in a solid performance in the 100 breaststroke, placing sixth with a time of 1:02.63.

"He dropped three seconds from his time and that's right where he wanted to be," said Karwoski. "It was remarkable."

Mahan placed 12th in the event last season.

Josh Carion headed up Freeport's effort with an 18th-place finish in the 100 freestyle.

In his only event of the day, Mars' Phil Pacey was 30th in the 100 backstroke.
