BUTLER TWP — Thursday's clash at Butler High wasn't your typical swimming meet.

Due to mechanical problems with the Seneca Valley pool, the Raiders' section meet with the Golden Tornado was moved to Butler.

The Raiders girls certainly made themselves at home, breaking four Butler pool records, including three by senior Rose Snyder, as they posted a 95-83 victory over the Tornado. The SV boys team also prevailed 88-75.

In the process, the Raiders girls team won its first section title in five years. The crown will be shared with North Allegheny.

Seneca Valley coach Tom Donati credited the pool records to swimmers getting ready for the WPIAL and PIAA meets, as well as a much-needed break during the week.

"Those two days off from school (because of snow) was a big benefit," said Donati. "It shows what you can do when you're rested.

"We had 30 kids at the Cranberry YMCA on Wednesday and 20 on Tuesday. That's the kind of kids we have. It was not a full-scale workout, just some swimming. We came in (Thursday) with no pressure."

Snyder broke pool records in the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 55.63 seconds) and in the 100 freestyle (53.90). The first mark was held previously by then-Butler senior Molly Evans (1:55.97).

Snyder also was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team. She was joined by Emily Wolfarth, Hollie Miller and Abby Myers to record a time of 1:39.29 that broke the pool record in the event that was set by North Allegheny in 1997

"Usually I'm not this good late in the season," said Snyder. "I usually feel I kind of struggle."

The fourth record went to Wolfarth, whose 5:01.86 in the 500 freestyle broke Evans' mark of a year ago by nearly six seconds.

Snyder also was a winning member of the 200 medley relay while Wolfarth claimed the 50 freestyle, Myers, a freshman, won the 100 butterfly and Diana Rocco the diving portion of the meet.

All that together helped the Raiders (10-2-1) to the section crown.

"These seniors never experienced it," said Donati. "Was it one of the goals? Really, we just wanted to swim fast and go to the state meet. We have a top-five team at WPIAL and at states.

"We'll stick to the plan to go to the WPIAL and swim fast. We were fifth last year and we added a freshman dynamo (in Myers),"Donati added.

"They're a good team," said Butler coach Jeff Armstrong. "We'll see them in the future. They lose some really strong swimmers and divers next year. Maybe they'll be as young as we are.

"They came in here and swam some good times. I don't expect anything less fromSeneca Valley,"Armstrong added.

The Butler girls (3-8) had wins by Brittany Vogel in the 200 individual medley (2:18.06), Megan Morrison in the 100 backstroke, Renee Clouse in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay, the latter three as exhibitions.

In the boys meet, Butler (1-10) won three of the first four events — Heath Calhoun in diving, Erik Bergh in the 200 freestyle and JasonClouse in the 200 individual medley — but the Raiders won the next seven events to gain separation.

"Jason Clouse swam extremely well, especially leading off our 400 free relay and winning 200 IM," said Armstrong. "He was probably our best swimmer of the day."

The Raiders' Bobby Beahm won the 50 and 100 freestyle races and was part of the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Dan Gutmann was on both relays and won the 100 breaststroke as well.
