2:55 p.m. Wednesday — A sport utility vehicle driven by Ralph Mariotti, 47, of Butler Township slid on slush-covered East Wayne Street and struck the rear of a car driven by Donald Best, 54, of Butler Township.

6:46 p.m. Wednesday — Two Washington County residents were arrested for shoplifting nearly $400 worth of DVDs at the Wal-Mart store in Butler Commons.Andrew Wernert, 25, and Rachel Johnson, 23, both of Eighty Four, are charged with retail theft and conspiracy. Following arraignment, Wernert and Johnson were placed in the Butler County Prison on bail of $5,000 and $2,000, respectively.12:56 p.m. Wednesday — Acar driven by a Penn Township girl skidded on an ice patch and slammed into an embankment on Old Plank Road near Crisswell Road. Police did not identify the girl.

Today — Police are investigating an overnight break-in at the Country Kitchen Restaurant on Route 8 in Penn Township. About $700 was stolen in the burglary between 8 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. today.Investigators, who do not know if more than one person was involved, found a broken window on the north side of the restaurant and the cash register pried apart. An office also was ransacked. Police estimated damage in the burglary at $400.7 a.m. Thursday — A car driven by a Butler youth slid into a utility pole on Dinnerbell Road near the entrance to the Bessemer Railroad underpass/tunnel. Police did not identify the 17-year-old driver, who fled the scene and faces hit-and-run charges in the crash.2:45 p.m. Thursday — A car driven by Frederick Bowen, 42, of Butler and a sport utility vehicle driven by Daniel Sailer, 65, of Evans City collided on Route 68 in Forward Township.5:38 a.m. Wednesday — An SUV driven by Joshua Barto, 33, of Butler struck a tree along snow-covered North Pike Road in Jefferson Township.

4:43 a.m. Wednesday — Atractor-trailer driven by Mark Wharf, 53, of New Haven, Ind., jackknifed after hitting a guardrail on Interstate 80 in Allegheny Township, Butler County.
