Butler wrestling coach Scott Stoner is looking for a school record Saturday.

The seeding of the Section 3-AAA Tournament at Fox Chapel High School says he'll find it.

The Golden Tornado have never sent more than six wrestlers to the WPIALTournament in one season. They have eight seeded among the top four in their respective weight classes Saturday.

The top four placers in each weight class advance to next weekend's WPIALTournament.

"I'm hoping we can get nine guys through,"Stoner said. "I know it can happen, but we have to wrestle well.

"There are years I've gone down there and been disappointed. Sometimes guys already have their uniforms turned in, they're counting the days. Sometimes freshmen don't have the desire needed to advance. You have to be focused and ready to go."

One Butler wrestler, 152-pound senior Josh Pascazi (26-6), has a No. 1 seed. Three others are seeded No. 2:119-pound freshman Mike Crawford (26-7), 130-pound freshman Cole Baxter (27-5) and 145-pound senior Alex Evanoff (31-1).

Stoner likes the chances of all three winning their weight classes.

Crawford is seeded behind junior Grant Evans (20-4), one of three Seneca Valley wrestlers to attain No. 1 seeds. The others are sophomore Nate Cully (21-4) at 135 and senior heavyweight Zach Eckstrom (19-5).

Dan Papst (12-9) is seeded fourth at 130 pounds for the Raiders, the only other Seneca Valley wrestler seeded among the top four.

"The seeding broke down the way we expected,"Seneca Valley coach Lee Mullett said. "Our kids have an opportunity and I'm hoping they take advantage of it.

"Zach came into his own at the section meet last year. He was hurt much of that season, put together a great tournament and has fed off that momentum. That's what this tournament can do."

Butler's Baxter lost to top-seed Andy Candiello of North Allegheny during the regular season.

"Cole will be motivated because he lost to Candiello and he remembers his losses. He goes over them in his mind,"Stoner said. "He took the kid down and got himself reversed.

Stoner expressed surprise that Evanoff wasn't the top seed at 145.

"Alex didn't face (top-seeded 29-1 Corey Perrotte of North Hills) during the year, but we have two more wins than him. Maybe they think we didn't wrestle as strong a schedule, I don't know."

Other Butler wrestlers seeded among the top four are third-seed Eric Tuck (20-12) at 103, fourth-seed Daman Redenbach (21-10) at 112, third-seed Jon Sanko (24-8) at 140 and fourth-seed Derek Hays (17-11) at 160.

Ken Rosenbauer (15-15) at 135 and Marino Quercio (13-8) at 215 are both seeded fifth for Butler.

"Some of our kids are on the bubble, but could get through,"Stoner said. "Eric Tuck is seeded third at 103 and was 8-1 in our section. He deserves that second seed and the committee took it away from him.

"I question some of the seedings, but when the day comes, we have to go out and compete."

Knoch has two wrestlers in the tournament, sophomore 112-pounder Grayson Hixon (16-9) and freshman James Zellhart (10-4) at 171, with winning records.

"We faced a lot of good teams. I challenged our kids. I didn't pad their records,"Knoch coach Mark McLaughlin said. "Hixon was a WPIALqualifier last year and he's wrestled between 112 and 125 all season. I'm thinking we can get him through.

"Zellhart is a freshman and he's been out for three weeks with a concussion. He hasn't had a lot of workout time since that injury.

"We're only a second-year program and Section 3 has a lot of good wrestlers. Whoever gets through to the WPIAL meet will represent our section well,"McLaughlin added.

Saturday's meet begins at 10:30 a.m. The finals are slated to start at 7 p.m.
