Rocky Grove jumped out to a 25-12 lead after the first quarter and held off Union 67-53 for the KSACchampionship in boys basketball action at Clarion High School Saturday.

The Union girls team also fell in their KSAC championship contest, 47-37, to Keystone.

The Orioles held a 37-28 lead at the break, but Union (16-8) opened the third quarter by scoring the first seven points to trim the deficit to two points.

"But then we turned the ball over six times in a row," said Union coach Karen Davis. "That just killed us and killed the momentum and we never got that back."

Rocky Grove used a 14-0 run to take a commanding 53-37 lead through three quarters.

A.J. Ethriedge led Union with 20 points and eight rebounds while Scott Booth added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Neil Scott also had eight rebounds and Spencer Varner added six assists.

Ethan Gravatt had 18 points, Cruz Mietus 17 points and Andrew Setzkorn 12 to lead the Orioles.

Keystone 47, Union 37

Torri Smith had 13 points and five steals and Tina Lipps 12 points and 11 rebounds, but the Damsels saw their three-year title run come to a halt at the hands of the Panthers.

Union held a 10-9 lead after one period, but the Panthers outscored Union (17-8) 21-10 in the middle two quarters to take control.

"We started out like we needed to, then we stalled offensively," said Union coach Josh Meeker. "I didn't think we did bad defensively. We only allowed 11 and 10 points in those quarters. I thought we did very well, but 37 points isn't enough to win a game like this."

Lipps had six points in the first quarter, but just one in the next two quarters while Smith had just two points in that same span.

The team was again without point guard Courtney Frederick and one of its top reserves in Brooke Pollock, both out with injuries.

"All season long, Courtney's been our No. 2 scorer and point guard. That makes a big difference," Meeker said.

Casey Hinterliter led the Panthers with 12 points.

Both Union squads will return to action Tuesday, when they host a District 9 Class A playoff doubleheader.

The Damsels will square off against East Forest for a 6 p.m. tipoff, while the Golden Knights will face Johnsonburg for a 7:30 p.m. start.
