Livestock programs planned
Looking for information on sheep production or natural and organic beef marketing?
Two programs will be offered at the Washington County Fairgrounds that will address these areas of livestock production.
At the SW PA Winter Sheep Workshop, new producers and experienced producers are invited to attend to learn about topics that affect your flock, your farm, and your bottom line.
The program is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 1. There is a registration fee of $15 per person due by Feb. 22. The fee covers lunch, refreshments, and program materials.
Topics of discussion include the National Animal Identification System, Pasture and Forage Insurance, Scrapie Program Update, Flock Health and Nutrition, and Care of the Newborn Lamb and It's Mother.
Natural and Organic Beef Marketing will look at the consumer's growing interest in natural and organic foods, which has opened the door for value added product production in a number of agricultural enterprises. The beef industry is no exception to this trend.
If you currently raise beef or dairy beef cattle or are interested in starting a herd, this workshop will provide information on regulations, government cost sharing opportunities, specialized marketing, and the development of value added products.
The program will from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 15. The registration fee of $45 per couple or $25 per person includes lunch and an education material packet. Registrations are due by March 7.
Keynote speakers are Patty Neiner, Pennsylvania Certified Organic and Dr. John Comerford, Penn State Extension beef specialist. Other presenters include Walt Bumgarner, Penn State Extension livestock educator, Jon Laughner, Penn State Extension ag entrepreneurship educator, and Gary Gregg of Eighty Four Packing.
