Fire from faulty chimney forces 5 from farmhouse

CONCORDTWP — A fire early this morning forced five people to flee their three-story farmhouse in Hooker.

No one was injured in the blaze about 12:40 a.m. at 246 Stephanie Road, fire officials said.

Afaulty chimney apparently started the fire, according to Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Stanley and Eileen Gavinski own the house and had recently moved out to allow other family members to move in, Campbell said.

The occupants — Eric Gavinski and his wife and their child, as well as Jamie and Janelle McElhaney — had used the fireplace overnight when Janelle noticed the house on fire and called 911.

Flames were coming out the side of the house when firefighters arrived.

Between 30 and 40 firefighters from West Sunbury, North Washington, Chicora, Oakland Township-Oneida Valley and Bruin battled the blaze in single-digit temperatures and a below-zero wind chill.

Campbell said cracks in the fireplace allowed the fire to ignite an outside wall and spread to the attic.

Acrew was able to quickly enter the house and put out the flames. A damage estimate was not available this morning. However, officials said the home was saved and can be repaired.

Campbell said the occupants are staying with relatives and declined assistance offered by the Butler chapter of the American Red Cross.

Authorities said the house is insured.

Firefighters were there until nearly 4 a.m.
