FOX CHAPEL— All Butler needed was an opening to escape.

A clerical error in the scorebook provided it — and the Golden Tornado were gone for a 54-36 girls basketball victory Saturday.

Shady Side Academy omitted a player's name from its scorebook and was charged with a technical foul with 2:53 left in the first quarter and the Tornado leading, 7-6, at the time. Jenna Manuel sank one of two free throws.

The end result was a 17-2 run that opened up a 23-8 lead for Butler. Shady Side never got the deficit out of double figures from there.

"That's the best team we're going to face this year,"Indians coach Amy Szlachetka said. "They're big, they're fast and they have a lot of depth.

"They run a disciplined break that gave us all kinds of trouble. We couldn't even run our spread offense because they kept jumping our cuts. That is a very good team."

While Butler (9-1) won its eighth straight game, Class AAShady Side Academy (7-3) saw a six-game winning streak come to an end.

The teams combined for 45 turnovers — Shady Side having 24 of them.

"They have a scrappy team and we knew this was going to be a tricky game to play right before the holiday break,"Butler coach Dorothea Epps said. "But our girls got it together and played pretty well, for the most part.

"We got everyone in the game and were able to rest some legs a little bit. That was part of our design going into this game."

Nine players scored points for the Tornado as Epps substituted throughout.

Butler took control of the game in the middle two quarters, outscoring the Indians by 15 points during that stretch.

The Tornado's 45-22 lead entering the final period was their biggest advantage of the game.

Olivia Bresnahan paced Butler with 17 points while Manuel added 12 off the bench, including three treys in the third quarter. Kaya Gilliland had five of 26 rebounds for the Tornado.

"Iwas impressed with that No. 10 (Bresnahan),"Szlachetka said. "She's so strong. We couldn't stop her from penetrating to the basket."

Manuel scored 17 points — including three treys — in Thursday's win at Pine-Richland. She also scored 15 in the junior varsity's 61-9 victory Saturday.

"Jenna's playing well. She's got a nice shot and she's not afraid to shoot it,"Epps said. "That definitely helps."

Jenny Briston had 12 points and six of Shady Side's 33 rebounds.

The Indians sank only 15 of 49 field goal attempts.

"Butler had a lot to do with that,"Szlachetka said. "We'll learn from this and move on. Our girls didn't back down and this game will help us gear up for the playoffs."

The Tornado leave Wednesday for a holiday tournament in Las Vegas, where Butler will play four games.
