ERIE — A woman was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison for swinging her 4-week-old son like a baseball bat at her boyfriend.
Chytoria Graham, 28, of Erie, was sentenced on aggravated assault and other charges Wednesday in Erie County Court.
Prosecutors said Graham and her boyfriend got into a fight early on Oct. 8, 2006, after Graham came home from a night of drinking. Graham grabbed her son, Jarron, by his feet and swung him, hitting the boyfriend and fracturing the infant's skull. The baby has recovered.
A jury convicted Graham in October. She faced a mandatory minimum of five years in prison because the assault involved a child under the age of 13. She was also placed on probation for two years.
Graham had pleaded guilty in March to aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child, but withdrew the plea in June.
Her attorneys said she entered the plea only because she had been drinking on the night of the fight and, as a caring mother, felt she was responsible for whatever happened to the child.
SWARTHMORE — Swarthmore College will eliminate student loans in its financial aid packages and replace them with scholarships beginning next academic year. The new policy will affect an estimated 740 new and continuing students, roughly half of Swarthmore's total enrollment, school officials said in an statement Wednesday."Loan-free awards will give our students the freedom to explore all career choices because they won't need to worry about how they will repay their college loans," said Jim Bock, dean of admissions and financial aid.Swarthmore, an elite liberal arts college outside Philadelphia, costs about $45,700 per year for tuition and room and board. The announcement comes on the heels of Monday's news from Harvard University that it would replace all loans with grants, and spend up to $22 million more annually on aid — mostly targeting middle- and upper-middle class students.
