CLARION — You can try and imagine what Terrelle Pryor is capable of doing, but it's never the same as an actual game situation.

During practice this past week, Karns City had some of its football alumni try to play the role of the Jeannette quarterback.

Despite the effort, Pryor was still able to make enough plays in Saturday's PIAAClass AA quarterfinal, passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 109 yards and another score as the Jayhawks came away with a 35-6 victory at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium.

The Jayhawks also benefitted from a pair of Karns City fumbles in the second quarter which led to touchdowns to build a 27-0 halftime lead.

"To break tackles and give him seven or eight seconds to pass ... the kids did what they had to do," explained Gremlins coach Ed Conto. "Our secondary did a great job ... We got through the line, but we just couldn't tackle him.

"We had an ex-quarterback try to simulate that, but you can't simulate his strength," Conto added."

"I think Karns City is a very good team," said Jayhawks' coach Ray Reitz. "Give credit to their coach. They're well-schooled and scrappy.

"They were 12-0. I thought they outhit us in the first quarter. They went 12-1 to finish the season. That's a pretty good squad,"Reitz added.

The Gremlins did more than hold their own in the first quarter, despite the Jayhawks opening the game with a 12-play drive. However, Pryor's incomplete pass on a fourth-and-3 at the KC 28 ended the possession.

An illegal shift by the Jayhawks on the drive negated a 47-yard touchdown pass.

On the Gremlins' first play from scrimmage, Markus LaVan broke free for a 23-yard gain, but the drive fizzled and the squad was forced to punt.

The Jayhawks (14-0) broke through on the ensuing possession, an eight-play, 94-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard scoring run by Jordan Hall with 58 seconds left in the frame.

The score was preceded by a 60-yard catch and run from Pryor to Gregg Williams down the sideline.

The next two Gremlins' possessions did not go well as Gremlins quarterback Anthony Stimac fumbled the handoff with Brett Green and was recovered by the Jayhawks at the KC 43.

Two plays later, Pryor shook off a pair of Gremlin tacklers behind the line of scrimmage and scampered off for a 37-yard touchdown.

The Gremlins' Ben Pyle took a hard hit and fumbled on the Gremlins' next possession, giving Jeannette the ball at the KC 40.

On the second play, Pryor broke several tackles for a 26-yard gain and the ball at the Gremlins 13.

Four plays later, Pryor found Dane Vaughn open in the back of the end zone with 3:20 left before halftime.

"He's an excellent player," said Stimac on Pryor. "We practiced all week with alumni. He was all over the place. His speed is tremendous."

After Karns City turned the ball over on downs, the Jayhawks punched in the ball once more before the half.

A 48-yard pass play to Hall gave Jeannette a first-and-goal at the KC 6.

Two plays later, with 22 seconds left, Pryor scrambled and found Hall in the back of the end zone to open up the 27-0 halftime advantage.

"Our kids came out and put (Jeannette) on their heels," said Conto. "We fumbled twice and our play dropped off just a bit. I thought we matched up well with the rest of their team. (Pryor) just did it on his own."

"We came out hitting real hard. I was proud of everyone," said Stimac. "We looked good for awhile. They had some little runs in there.

Jeannette scored on its fourth consecutive possession when Kenny Grant scored from 14 yards out with 6:14 remaining in the third quarter.

When Pryor hooked up with Hall for the two-point conversion, the 35-point lead put the mercy rule in effect, marking the 13th time in 14 games the Jayhawks have turned the trick.

"They prepared well for us at first," said Pryor. "But we knew we would score and put the mercy rule on them. It was just a matter of time.

"They took away our outside game and they were good on the outside. They're well-coached on how to tackle people," Pryor added.

Unlike other teams, the Gremlins did not fold and were able to stop the Jayhawks on their next possession when a 29-yard field goal attempt by John Stapf sailed wide.

Karns City responded with its lone score of the day when Stimac engineered a six-play, 80-yard drive, culminating on his 44-yard run with 6:12 remaining.After holding the Jayhawks to three plays and a punt, the Gremlins marched downfield as time was running out.After driving 66 yards in seven plays, the Gremlins faced a second-and-2 at the Jeannette 3, Stimac's pass to Cameron Turner in the end zone was knocked away. A penalty on the play pushed the ball back to the 18 with one second left before time expired.The Jayhawks will advance to face Wilmington in the PIAAsemifinals this weekend. He hopes his team can continue its run and likes how well they are playing right now."Hey, we're happy to win by one point," said Reitz. "Absolutely, you'd like to win by more. These other teams we're playing are very good and we respect Karns City very much."You always hope to keep getting better. We play to win the game, but you don't want to be a pig about it."With the season at a close, the Gremlins will bid farewell to its five seniors — Cameron Turner, Mike McConnell, Matt McConnell, Brett Green and Stephon Conto."We're proud of what the kids were able to do," said Conto. "We had five seniors who are a good group of kids. You don't make it to the championship with just five seniors. Whoever can do it, it's rare, but it shows you the kind of leadership we have.""There was a lot of leadership," said Stimac. "Last year we had five seniors, but they didn't talk much. This year, we had five guys who helped us a lot and gave us tremendous leadership."<B>Notes:</B> Stimac led the Gremlins with 64 yards rushing on 12 carries ...
