GLENSHAW — Teachers in the Shaler Area School District still don't have a new contract, but they're also not on strike as planned.

The teachers on Monday voted to reject a tentative contract reached Nov. 19. But teachers' union president Jo Ann Noble says the vote was too close to warrant striking on Tuesday as planned.

Union officials wouldn't say how close the vote was, but school board president James Giel says the contract was rejected by 59 percent of the teachers.

Noble says the teachers object to the amount of health care premiums they were being asked to pay. The teachers haven't paid for health care in the past.

Both sides hope to schedule more contract talks.
