drug legalization

ameshaa@aol.com

Jim from Evans City asks my position on the drinking age, legalization of more potent drugs, and speed limit laws. For the record, I support lowering of the drinking age to 18 and legalization of all drugs. The principle underlying my position is that an individual (adult) has a right to do what they wish to their own body and individuals are sovereign over themselves. Our drug laws are largely to blame for our drug problems and lessons can be drawn from countries like the Netherlands where, despite liberal drug laws, drug use is not a major societal problem. My beliefs regarding an individual's use of drugs is not equivalent to believing speed limits should not exist on roads. In an ideal society, where roads are privately owned, the owner of the road would be free to set the speed limit on their road or highway.

I appreciate Lisa Weisenstein's comments regarding the legalization of marijuana and the absurdity of prosecuting marijuana users. Regarding her comments on my invoking of the Constitution, I disagree with her. I believe that when advocating for the legalization of drugs an appeal to the Constitution is warranted because the document explicitly relies on the fundamental principle that a person is sovereign over themselves.
