Lowrie/Shaw house opens for holidays

The Butler County Historical Society will have the Lowrie/Shaw House decorated and open for tours for the holidays starting Dec. 3.

It will be open Dec. 3, 10, 17, and 31 from noon until 4 p.m., and on Dec, 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The cost is $3 for adults; $1 for youths 5 to 17 years old; and free for children younger than 5.

Built in 1828 by Walter Lowrie, Butler's only U.S. senator, this historic house and museum has been restored and filled with original artifacts from the late 19th century when the home was owned by the Sullivan family, the last family to occupy the house.

The Lowrie/Shaw House is at 123 W. Diamond St., directly behind the courthouse.

The historical society office also is in the Lowrie/Shaw House and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The society sells many local history publications and items, which can be holiday gifts. Check out the office, view the catalog online at www.butlercountyhistoricalsociety-pa.org or call 724-283-8116.
