The 'other' Waldorf salad

1 bunch Romaine lettuce, cleaned and torn into pieces1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans¾ cup chopped dates1 red apple, diced or thinly sliced1 cup grapes, whole or halvedDressing½ cup sugar1 teaspoon salt (or less, to taste)1 teaspoon dry mustard1/3 cup red wine vinegar½ tablespoon dried minced onion1 cup vegetable oil½ tablespoon poppy seedsCombine salad ingredients in a small bowl.In a separate bowl, whisk sugar, salt, mustard, vinegar and onion while slowly pouring in vegetable oil. Add poppy seeds and mix until blended.Add dressing to salad just before serving.Makes 10 to 12 servings.
