Rock women win 1st
Slippery Rock University used a balanced attack Saturday to knock off Davis &Elkins, 63-53, in the second round of the Clarion Classic women's basketball tournament at the Tippin Gymnasium.
KellyAnn Staudinger led The Rock (1-1) with 12 points and eight rebounds. Amanda Nero added 11 points while Chere' Marshall and Nijha McNeely scored 10 each.
Cara Waybright led Davis &Elkins (0-2) with 18 points, Courtney Pawlak adding 16.
SRUled 34-20 at halftime before Davis &Elkins trimmed the margin to 36-33 with more than 15 minutes remaining. A 13-4 run by The Rock sealed the victory.
SRUopens its home schedule at 6 p.m. Tuesday, facing Fairmont State at Morrow Field House. The Rock men begin their schedule Tuesday as well, hosting Mercyhurst at 8 p.m.
Butler County Community College (women) 70, Westmoreland CC52 — The Pioneers improved to 2-1 as Slippery Rock High School graduate Lea Roth scored 30 points, including six 3-pointers.Butler graduate Ashley Nocera added 19 points and three treys.
