WARRENDALE — No matter how hard it tried, the Mars hockey team tried to keep things under control.

So much for the best-laid plans.

The Planets scored 10 seconds into their PIHLClass A game against Forest Hills Friday and kept on scoring, rolling to an improbable 25-0 victory at Warrendale BladeRunners.

"I never had seen that in my seven years of coaching," said Mars coach Tim Coleman. "I told the guys to hold back, but you can only do so much. We're working to do the best we can.

"I told the guys to pass the puck, work it around and get out of there without any injuries.

"I felt bad for (Forest Hills). It was 12-0 after the first period and there was a running clock after the seventh goal. The (scoreboard) only posted up to 15 goals," Coleman added.

The win improved the Planets to 4-0 as they sit atop the Section 3-A standings. They have outscored their opponents 53-0, including 39-0 in the last two games.

Mars opened the season with identical 7-0 victories over Sewickley Academy and Center before a 14-0 drubbing of Deer Lakes.

On Friday, senior team captain Mike Heltman, junior forward Jake Robash and senior forward Ian Finney each registered hat tricks while senior defenseman Sean Roche had a goal and a few assists.

Even players such as sophomore Brady Sipe and freshman Tyler Thomas recorded their first varsity goals.

"Coach tells us to play with class," said Roche. "We've all been in that situation. We tried to make the extra passes, but whenever you get wide open, you have to take it.

"The last thing you want to do is run up the score," Roche added.

Heltman agreed.

"We tried to make the extra passes when we could," said Heltman. "You don't want to embarrass teams by doing extra things. It's unfortunate. I felt bad for them."

One of the Planets' assistant captains had joked to Coleman about outscoring the Mars football team (who lost to Aliquippa 42-20 in the WPIALClass AA quarterfinals Friday), but Coleman told him to back off.

"We still have 19 more games and we have to focus," said Coleman. "We'll get these games under our belt because we have two big games coming up. Fortunately, the schedule has worked our way. The time will come.

"The key word is focus. Focus, focus, focus. We can't be complacent at all with Serra (Nov. 20) and Quaker Valley (Nov. 27) coming up," Coleman added.

The Planets know things will get tougher soon, but know they'll be up to the task.

"We have a lot of great players and we were expecting a great year," said Roche.
