It was deja vu for the Seneca Valley and Mars boys cross country teams on Thursday, but they certainly don't mind.

Both squads finished runners-up in the WPIALClass AAA and AA Championships Thursday at Cooper's Lake.

Seneca Valley finished second behind North Allegheny and Mars was second behind Quaker Valley, both for the second consecutive season. North Hills was third and Baldwin fourth to round out the WPIAL's berths in next week's PIAA Championships in Hershey.

Cam Stauffer (fourth), Chris Cipro (eighth) and Andrew Rasanauskas (12th) keyed the Raiders' attack.

"They were running a little better this year," said Seneca Valley coach Jim Nagle. "I'm surprised how much North Hills had improved over the season. (Coach) John Wilkie has done a tremendous job."

The Quakers easily outdistanced the field in defending their title.

"We knew we'd be at least second," said Mars coach Joelle Patterson, whose team won the section title this year. "Quaker Valley still blew us away, but we had four runners that ran their best times of the year."

Also in the boys Class AAA meet, Butler's Ben Porter (20th, 16:44) and Wayne Dailey (33rd, 17:12) have advanced to the state championship Nov. 3.

"We're definitely pleased both qualified," said Butler coach Rick Davanzati.

"Over the last three years, we've seemed to have gotten steadily better team-wise, but not seemed to have gotten any closer to the state meet. The whole WPIAL has stepped up," he added.

In the girls Class AAA meet, Knoch freshman Jolene Kunkel placed 18th to become the first medalist and state qualifier in the girls program's history.
