KARNS CITY — Bend it like Julieanne.

Karns City senior midfielder Julieanne Scott has a big break on her boots, much like that of her favorite player, David Beckham.

That ability is something Scott takes a great deal of pride in, and it was a big reason why the Gremlins routed Kane 8-0 in the first round of the District 9 Class AA girls soccer playoffs Thursday.

She scored the first goal of the night when her corner kick curved into the left side of the net. Scott set up headers by teammate Michelle Sweeney on two other kicks from the corner that resulted in goals.

Scott can bend it with the best of them.

"That's what my teammates were saying," Scott said. "I love Beckham, so that's flattering. We're going to get married, you know, so I might as well bend it like him."

Now all she has to do is get rid of Posh Spice.

If she needs a cool Spice Girl nickname, "Versatile Spice" might suffice.

Scott started her soccer career as a sweeper. Then she moved to midfield, where she can show off her defensive and offensive skills.

Scott scored two goals and had two assists in the romp over Kane (8-9) and has scored 20 goals after scoring 12 last year.

"It's fun," Scott said. "Defense is where I always played, and I like playing defense, but I like scoring and playing forward, so they go together pretty well."

It helps that Scott has dynamic players around her.

Sweeney scored three goals in the first half againstKane, helping the Gremlins (16-4-1) stake a 6-0 lead at the break.

Allyson Kepple, the team's leading scorer, added two second-half goals to put the final shine on an opening-round gem.

"(Scott), Michelle Sweeney and Allyson Kepple are somewhere close to 75, 80 goals between them this season," said Karns City coach Lisa Castiglione. "They split them pretty evenly in games. They are unselfish players and all three of them know how to score well."

Scott's presence was also felt on defense.

Karns City outshot Kane 28-0, as the Wolves struggled to merely cross midfield.

"She's a natural defender," Castiglione said. "She has the skills. She has the ability. You can put Julieanne anywhere on the field and she would do very, very well for us."

Scott hopes to keep on playing well into November.

Last year, the Gremlins cruised into the state playoffs, but lost to Seton-LaSalle in the first round.

The only mission that matters now for Scott and Karns City is to get back to the state playoffs — and keep winning once there.

"It's really motivating," Scott said. "We didn't lose anyone, so we still have the same good players on this field."

Karns City will host Brookville Tuesday in the district semifinals at a time to be determined.
