ADAMS TWP — None of the big scorers could find the net Tuesday night.

But one of them. Chartiers Valley senior Joe Puleo, found a teammate who did.

Puleo, an 18-goal scorer, slid a pass across the goalmouth to sophomore Joe Pacella, who drilled it past diving Butler goalkeeper Zeke O'Donnell. The tally occurred with 1:41 left in the first overtime period and handed the Colts a 2-1 WPIALClass AAAboys soccer playoff victory over the Golden Tornado at Mars Stadium.

Chartiers Valley (14-5-0) moves on to play Hempfield (12-9), a surprise 1-0 winner over previously unbeaten Franklin Regional, while Butler ended its season at 15-4-1.

"That was the first time we've lost in overtime all year,"Tornado coach Troy Mohney said. "We were 3-0-1 before this. But anything can happen when the next goal decides things."

All three goal scorers in this game had not tallied a goal all season.

Butler got on the board first when Jake Gamble's shot was stopped by Colts goalkeeper John Manganaro, but bounced away from him.

Two Butler players had a vacant net in front of them and freshman Sean Bernardi knocked the ball into the goal with 7:16 left in the first half.

"Our kids never relaxed after that,"Mohney said. "We just never got that second goal to put the game away."

The Tornado had their chances:

• Just before Bernardi's goal, Ryan Armahizer deked a defender and set up Gamble with a pass, but Manganaro made a sprawling save.

• Andy Schnur, set up by Armahizer, chipped a shot just over the net with 4:40 left in the first half.

• Gamble was stopped by Manganaro at point-blank range with 33:10 left in the second half.

• Drew Donoghue hit the crossbar with 5:20 left in regulation

• With 1:03 to go, Manganaro came out of the goal crease to smother a pass just before Armahizer could reach it.

Chartiers Valley was getting its chances as well. The shots on goal were even at 11 each for the game, nine each in regulation.

"This was a well-played, evenly matched game all the way,"Chartiers Valley coach Gary Weber said. "Butler has so much ability and that team is well-coached.

"The ball bounced our way. We're very fortunate to get out of here."

The Colts tied the game with 20:08 left in the second half when sophomore defender Kevin Helbig, aggressively attacking from the right corner, rolled a shot past a lunging O'Donnell and into the far corner of the net.

"Yeah, they needed a goal and their defenders were attacking,"Mohney said. "But that also leaves the defense susceptible to scoring chances going the other way. We couldn't put one in.

"It's a shame we had to play this team now. I didn't like the seeding, but you have to play the hand you're dealt."

Weber agreed.

"This was more like a third-round game than a first-round game,"he said.

Chartiers Valley has been to the playoffs in all six of Weber's years as head coach. The Colts won the state championship in 2002.

With four minutes left in overtime, Alex Krouse's shot from 15 yards out was smothered by Manganaro, who came out to challenge the shooter.

Armahizer and Gamble had 10 goals each this year for Butler. Puleo had 18 and Carmen Minella 15 for Chartiers Valley. None scored Tuesday.

When Pacella's shot landed in the net, numerous Butler players dropped to the turf and lay sprawled on the ground in disbelief.

"I'm sick for our kids,"Mohney said. "They're not only great soccer players, they're great people. I've been working with our seniors for three years now and I'm gonna miss them."

Playing their final game for Butler were Armahizer, Taylor Blose, Ryan Burger, Ryan Hohn, Jake Huey, Matt Kreutzer, Krouse, O'Donnell, Troy Reinsel, Schnur and Alex Sintz.
