Birth control pills in Maine School
Terry Kunselman's opposition to the availability of oral contraceptive pills in the Portland school district in Maine is based on falsehoods that merit correction.
Kunselman writes that the medications are dispensed without parental notification. While the relationship between patient and physician is confidential, the regulation stipulates that parents must consent to allow their children to avail themselves of this school-based clinic. If parents don't consent, students have no access to the clinics services. To say that parents aren't part of the process is clearly false.
Kuselman is also wrong on the definition of statutory rape. In Maine, a person is guilty of sexual abuse of a minor if he engages in a sexual act with someone, other than his spouse, who is either age 14 or 15 and the actor is at least five years older.
