RIMERSBURG — There are no playoff bids coming for either Union or Clarion-Limestone, so both teams played for pride Friday night.

C-L took advantage of five Union turnovers on its way to a 34-14 football victory over the Golden Knights.

The Lions did most of their offensive damage on the ground, gaining 216 yards. Andy Wilson led the attack with 102 yards on nine carries.

"Typically, we throw the ball, but that wasn't there tonight," said C-L coach Todd Smith. "It's been a long time since we were able to run the ball like that, so that was fun."

Union drew first blood when Colby Davis darted 25 yards through the Lion defense to give Union an early 6-0 lead.

The Knights' Trent Switzer intercepted a Dan Miller pass at the C-L 40-yard line and returned it to the Lions 20, setting up the touchdown run by Davis.

After forcing C-L to punt on the ensuing possession, Union got the ball at its own 4.

However, Davis mishandled the handoff by Matt Gagliano in the end zone and C-L's Brandon Love fell on the loose ball to even the game at 6.

"We were our own worst enemy," said Union coach Tom Kidder.

Early in the second quarter, C-L drove to the Union 30-yard line, but Switzer picked off a Miller pass in the end zone for a touchback.

Union could not capitalize and was forced to punt.

On the ensuing possession, the Lions put the go-ahead score on the board when Harry Cooper barreled through the Union defense for the touchdown.

Cooper had 82 yards on 19 carries.

The Lions turned the ball over deep in Golden Knights territory on their first possession of the second half when Switzer picked off another Miller pass in the end zone.

However, Union was unable to move the ball and was forced to punt.

Six plays later, Miller found a wide-open Wilson in the corner of the end zone for a 26-yard score.

The Lions tacked on another score with two minutes gone in the fourth quarter when Wilson ran through a gaping hole in the Union defense for a 12-yard touchdown.

Union answered on its next possession when Davis ran a sweep around left end for a 53-yard touchdown.

Davis had 154 yards on 17 carries and two scores.

"(Davis) is a good running back," said Kidder. "We thought we could run on them tonight, and we did."

Unfortunately for Union, its passing attack never got going, with Gagliano completing only 3 of 16 passes for 22 yards and one interception.

Union closes its season next week when it hosts Karns City.
