NUMINE — Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.

Freeport ran nearly two plays to every one by West Shamokin and its offense was on the field nearly three times as long as the Yellowjackets evened their Allegheny Conference record at 3-3 with a 26-0 win over the Wolves.

Freeport's offense held the ball for 36 minutes, 21 seconds, including 19:35 in the second half.

"At the end, they wore us down," West Shamokin head coach Shawn Liotta said.

In the first half, Freeport's offense was able to move the ball between the 20s, but West Shamokin's red zone defense was strong, holding Freeport to two Andrew Vidra field goals.

In the first half, Freeport had the ball inside the 25-yard line four times, but came away with just two field goals.

"It was a good win," Freeport head coach Bill Dillen said. "We struggled in the first half. Shawn did a nice job. This was the best team we've seen here."

Vidra had enough leg on a 40-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter, but it sailed wide right. West Shamokin's defense stymied Freeport's offense on the 5 on its other trip inside the 25-yard line.

In the first half, Freeport outgained West Shamokin 142-18, but led only 6-0.

In the second half, Freeport's defense was on the field for only 4:25 and yielded only 36 yards of offense to West Shamokin.

"We used a lot of looks on defense," Dillen said. "We used basic stunts and put pressure on them. We didn't make many adjustments at the half."

West Shamokin sophomore quarterback Brad Lutz fumbled on the Wolves' first play from scrimmage and Freeport lineman Nick Ippolitto recovered the ball at the West Shamokin 20. But Freeport failed to score any points despite the short field.

"We were too complacent in the first half," Dillen said.

Freeport didn't have to make any adjustments at the half. In the second half, Freeport simply wore down West Shamokin by putting together two 15-play drives that ended on 1-yard touchdown runs by Vidra and Cameron Betush.

Vidra gained 76 yards rushing on 24 carries and Betush had 51 yards.
