SLIPPERY ROCK — The Rockets don't play well with others.

They have sharing issues, but SlipperyRock High football coach Clyde Conti is fine with that.

His team played the perfect game of keep away Friday night against Oil City, scoring on two long touchdown drives that used nearly 16 minutes on the way to a 35-14 win on homecoming night.

"That's our style," Conti said.

The Rockets gobbled up nearly eight minutes on a methodical 14-play, 87-yard march in the first half.

J.R. Thompson capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to put the Rockets up 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Slippery Rock (3-3, 2-0) capped its offensive night by marching 60 yards on 10 plays, consuming a little more than seven minutes, to take a 35-7 lead late in the fourth quarter.

The drive was kept alive by two third-and-long receptions by Zack Ejzak.

The senior wide receiver caught three passes for 46 yards — all for first downs on third-down plays.

SlipperyRock converted its first six third-down opportunities and both of its fourth-down chances in the game.

"We made those big plays tonight," Conti said. "We're playing hard, and that's all you can ask."

SlipperyRock's penchant for keeping its offense on the field dismayed OilCity coach BillHeber.

"We would hold, then they would make a great play," Heber said. "We had people in position, but it just wasn't enough."

OilCity had a little glimmer of hope heading into halftime.

Freshman quarterback Ben Koyak, who started the season as a tight end, avoided a sack and threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wise in the back of the end zone with no time on the clock in the second quarter.

That pass closed the lead to 21-7.

"Hey. It happens," Conti said. "You don't have to be perfect in this world. You can always come back."

Slippery Rock did.

OilCity (0-6, 0-3) received the ball to start the third quarter, but was forced to punt after three running plays resulted in just seven yards.

The Rockets couldn't do anything on their possession, but the Oilers' second possession of the half also stalled after three running plays resulted in only eight yards.

"We couldn't get anything going," Heber said. "We get the ball, and we can't move it. We stop them, get the ball back, and can't move it. Next thing you know, we're down 28-7."

OilCity threatened again, but Thompson intercepted Koyak inside the SlipperyRock 5 to end another Oilers drive.

"It was huge to hold them down on their first possession of the second half," Conti said. "And I thought Thompson's interception down there was a clincher."

Quarterback Jonathan Powell enjoyed another big night for Slippery Rock. He was 4-of-6 passing for 55 yards and ran for 113 yards on 13 carries.

His 48-yard touchdown run, made possible by a perfectly executed ball fake, put the Rockets up 7-0 early.

TheRockets also got a boost from the return of Ryan Ferguson.

The senior fullback, who missed the last two games because of a hip injury, scored on touchdown runs of 4, 2 and 5 yards.

Slippery Rock will face a big test next week when it travels to Titusville, which is unbeaten in the region and is ranked No. 5 in the state in Class AAA.

Still, the win over OilCity gives SlipperyRock something it hasn't had in several seasons.

"We control our own destiny," Conti said. "We have a month of games to go and we have to keep going at it. I just want these kids to enjoy this. What a great night for these kids on homecoming. You have to feel good about that."
