Butler duo makes 3rd-place match

Butler's No. 1 girls tennis doubles duo of Carolyn Shetter and Madison Kerr advanced to today's WPIAL Section 2-AAA third-place match after defeating teams from Knoch and North Hills Thursday and losing to a tandem from North Allegheny.

Shetter and Kerr will face Pine-Richland's Olivia Heim and Shelby Merilli at 1:30 p.m. today at North Allegheny High School.

It's the furthest a Butler doubles team has gone since Jocelyn Kerr and Courtney Kerr placed fourth in 2004.

In Thursday's action, Shetter and Kerr defeated Knoch's Jenna Kanterman and Sarah Cypher 10-0 before knocking off North Hills' Emily and Winkler-Michaela Varys 10-8.

In the semifinal match, NA's Kelly Whelan and Jen Larimore defeated Shetter and Kerr 6-0, 6-2.

Slippery Rock 4, Sharon 0 —Mike Ramirez tallied two goals and Dustin Hribal and Ryan Hyatt each scored once to help Slippery Rock defeat Sharon 4-0 Thursday.Devan Hribal contributed three assists and goalkeeper Abir Chatterjee earned the shutout for the Rockets (10-1-1, 10-0-1).Butler 3, North Hills 1 — Alex Krouse had two goals and Ryan Armahizer had the other to lead the Tornado.Matt Kreutzer added two assists and Jake Gamble one for Butler (10-3-1, 6-2), which hosts undefeated Bethel Park Saturday.Mars 3, Kittanning 1 — Dylan McNany, Tim Frigot and Scott Sowers scored the Planets' goals. Karns City 2, Clearfield 0 — Michelle Sweeney and Allyson Kepple scored and Julieanne Scott assisted on both goals to lead the Gremlins.Alaina Burns earned the shutout in goal for Karns City (10-3), which plays at Redbank Valley Monday.Butler 1, North Hills 0 — Freshman Mackenzie Hohn scored the lone goal in this recent game. Grove City finished in third place at the 36-team Tam O'Shanter Invitational in Hermitage with a score of 313, one stroke behind runner-up Kennedy Catholic and 11 behind winner Cathedral Prep.Ryan Prokay fired a 72, Derek Forese a 73, Steve Deyarmin 83 and Shane Gilmore 85 for Grove City.Butler High placed ninth with a 319, led by Antonio Baroffio's 78. Steven Feczko shot a 79 for the Golden Tornado, Zach Pennington an 80 and Andrew Shakely an 82.Slippery Rock finished in 19th place (345) as Jeff Tracy shot an 80, Jenna Rinker an 83, Brian Giesler 92 and Shawn Beatty 92. Rinker was the only female competing and finished tied for 56th out of 144 golfers.Mike Klaric of Kennedy Catholic finished first overall for the second consecutive year with a 71, winning a playoff hole over Ross Pringle of Titusville.Next up, Forese, Prokay, Deyarmin, Tracy and Nick Cress will compete in Tuesday's District 10 Championship at Grove City Country Club.
