TRAIL TREKS

Here is a list of surfaced bicycle trails in and around Butler County. Bikes can be rented at some of the locations.

• <B>Butler Freeport Community Trail</B> — A 20-mile surfaced rail trail between Laneville in Freeport and Herman. The four miles between Butler and Herman are as yet unpaved. Access points are identified at www.butlerfreeporttrail.org/maps.html.• <B>Moraine State Park</B> — A one-way 7-mile trail in Butler County that follows the Lake Arthur shoreline between the Marina Restaurant and the bike rental building in the park's northwest corner. The trail can also be accessed in various spots near Lakeview Beach and Watts Bay Marina.The park also features a 6-mile loop for mountain bikes on the North Shore. Trailheads are located off of Mt. Goddard State </B>Park — A paved 12-mile trail in Mercer County accessed by taking the Sandy Lake-Greenville exit off I-79. The trail, which features a more hilly terrain than the region's rail trails, follows the perimeter of Lake Wilhelm. The trail can be accessed near the marina or at many of the boat launch sites.For more information, go to www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/recreation/biking_greatlakes.aspx or call 724-253-4833.• <B>Presque Isle State Park</B> — The Karl Boyes Multipurpose National Recreation Trail makes a 13.5-mile circuit of the park in Erie County. For information, see www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/recreation/biking_greatlakes.aspx or call 814-833-7424.• <B>Oil Creek State Park</B> — A 9.7-mile rail trail through Oil Creek Gorge. The trail runs between the Drake Well Museum and Petroleum Center, where bikers can pay to board the train with their bikes for the return trip. The park is between Oil City and Titusville in Venango County. See www.dcnr.state.pa.us/outdooradventures.aspx or call 814-676-5915.•<B> Allegheny Valley and Samuel Justus trails</B> — This approximately 30-mile rail trail system runs between Oil City and Emlenton. The Sandy Creek Trail, which comprises about 8 miles, splinters off the trail near Franklin. For information, go to www.avta-trails.org/sandy-creek-trail.html.• <B> Youghiogheny River Trail — </B>Includes 27 miles in Ohiopyle State Park, much of which lies in Fayette County. The trail connects to the Great Allegheny Passage, which runs from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md. The former railbed is surfaced with crushed limestone. For information, go to www.theneonweb.com/trails/stavich.html.• <B> Montour Trail — </B>Crushed limestone surface that extends 46 miles from Coraopolis, Allegheny County to Clairton, Washington County. A portion of the trail in Peters Township is called The Arrowhead Trail. The Panhandle Trail stretches 29 miles between Carnegie and Weirton, W.Va. The portion of the trail in Allegheny County is managed by the Montour Trail Council. For more information, go to www.montourtrail.org.
