The word domination has not been used to describe the Seneca Valley defense in recent years.

But times have changed, and a closer look at the statistics reveals it didn't start with last week's 19-0 upset of Kiski Area.

Over the last two games, including a 13-12 win over Penn-Trafford Sept. 8, SV's defensive unit has put up some staggering numbers.

The Warriors and Cavaliers combined for 40 rushes against the Raiders the last two weeks for a grand total of minus-3 yards.

Opposing quarterbacks have combined to complete 22-of-51 passes for 211 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

Kiski and Penn-Trafford managed 14 first downs combined and the teams were forced into a total of nine three-and-outs.

The two touchdowns that Seneca Valley did surrender to Penn-Trafford can hardly be blamed on the team's defense.

One score came one play after the Warriors recovered a bad punt snap on SV's 5-yard line and the other came on a 92-yard kickoff return.

But Raiders coach Ron Butschle is not basking in the afterglow of two great defensive performances.

"I don't want the kids thinking about last week," he said. "But if we just continue to get the effort like we've had, we've got a chance to be a good football team."

The Raiders will bring their 2-1 record to Baldwin for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday.

Baldwin (1-2) lost to Gateway 35-7 last week. The team's lone win was a 14-7 victory over Woodland Hills (0-3).

Highlanders first-year coach Dan Pallante admits his team's offense is not yet a well-oiled machine.

"We run the triple option," he said. "We're nowhere near running it like I'd like us to be, but the kids are getting there."

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for an offense set to face a defense that is fast-becoming a demolition crew.

Baldwin's chances lie with senior quarterback Jeff Joyce and sophomore fullback Quinn Hood.

Hood rushed for 147 yards in a Week 1 loss to Shaler, scoring two of his team's three touchdowns.

"He's not a slashing-type of runner," said Pallante of Hood, who stands 5-feet-9 and weighs 195 pounds. "But he's a tough kid and so is our quarterback. When you run the triple option, the quarterback and fullback are going to get hit on every play, so they have to be tough."

SV doesn't plan to give Baldwin a break when the Highlanders defense is on the field.

Raiders quarterback C.J. Brown has passed for 402 yards and two touchdowns this season.

His favorite target is junior receiver Matt Plautz, who has caught 13 passes for 193 yards and has both of SV's scores through the air.

"This will be the first time, whether in a scrimmage or in a game, that we will have faced a team that likes to throw the football," Pallante said. "Seneca Valley's receivers aren't lightning quick, but they run very good routes."

The Raiders won last year's meeting with the Highlanders 22-6.
