CMU to demonstrate robot moon rover built for NASA
PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Mellon University plans to demonstrate a four-wheeled lunar rover built for NASA to help search for natural resources on the moon.
The university's Robotics Institute will unveil the vehicle, called Scarab, on Thursday.
The rover is equipped with a drill capable of extracting 1-meter geologic cores. Its suspension allows it to lower its belly to the ground for drilling operations and runs on the same amount of electrical power that would be required to illuminate a 100-watt light bulb, the university said in a statement.
The Scarab project, sponsored by NASA, is separate from a Carnegie Mellon plan to compete for a moon landing prize being offered by X Prize Foundation and Google.
