SLIPPERY ROCK — Brett McGinnis will soon have a second claim to fame, appearing in a music video taped at Slippery Rock University.

An SRU freshman, the 18 year old was one of several SRU students involved in the filming on Sept. 8. It was taped at the Strain Behavioral Science Building and featured the group, Farewell, performing "First One on the Blog."

McGinnis, a Cherry Township resident and Moniteau High School graduate, said he was excited by the opportunity.

"I'm interested in video production," he said.

McGinnis was fascinated by the process, noting how the production crew would conceive ideas while taping was under way.

He also was impressed by the theme of the video — a spoof of the popular Internet site, MySpace, done in a classroom setting.

Part of the video has students being shown how to create their own MySpace pages using digital photographs of themselves and learning Internet lingo.

McGinnis said he thought the theme was clever and original. He also was surprised to find he enjoyed the North Carolina-based band's music.

McGinnis compared Farewell's sound to the punk rock band, Fall Out Boy.

The roughly 15 student extras were able to fulfill a fantasy of many of their counterparts across the country.

"In the last scene, we trashed the (class) room," McGinnis said.

Beth Yasika, 18, of Chicora, was another SRU student doing scenes for the video.

"I thought it would be a good experience," she said.

Yasika has a music background, having performed in Karns City High School musicals, the band and choir.

She was surprised by the number of re-shoots needed by the production crew to capture scenes from various camera angles.

Other SRU students acting as extras included Jackie Bailey and Mark Frazer of Karns City, Liz Glazier and Amanda McKenna of Slippery Rock, and Aaron Griffith of Cranberry Township.

The cast also included students from other Pittsburgh area colleges.

The video is scheduled to air nationally on the cable channels MTV2 and Fuse, which also shows music videos, starting Oct. 1.

The song is on the group's CD to be released later this month.

Although the SRU students weren't paid, they received pop, pizza and the opportunity to be on national television — something McGinnis had done earlier.

In May, as a high school senior, he appeared on "The Early Show" on CBS during a three-day school trip to New York. He landed his spot with a sign that misspelled Moniteau, leaving out the "n."

McGinnis said the error was intentional, designed to attract attention. His ploy worked as the show's weatherman interviewed him.

People still talk about that.

"It's been a good story for college," McGinnis said.

Now, he eagerly anticipates more time in the spotlight, thanks to the music video.

"It was a lot of fun," he said.
