FOX CHAPEL— The game started with disaster and ended in frustration.

In between, Butler played well enough to win Friday night at Fox Chapel — but didn't.

Kyle Majerick kicked a go-ahead 23-yard field goal with 7:21 left in the game and the Foxes made it stand up for a 19-17 high school football triumph over the Golden Tornado Friday night.

"Our offense and defense did the job when it mattered most,"Fox Chapel coach Bryan Deal said. "They beat us the last couple of years. ... This feels pretty good."

Fox Chapel (1-2) had a 16-0 lead before the game was barely seven minutes old. On the second play of the contest, quarterback Julian Salerno tossed an overhand lateral to Colin Hartford, who connected with receiver Jayce Duquette for a 44-yard completion. The play set up a 43-yard field goal by Majerick.

Butler (0-3) went three-and-out on its first possession and Cole Harvey bobbled a high punt snap inside his own 5-yard line. When he tried to scoop the ball off the artificial turf, he was hit by defenders and the ball was deflected into the end zone.

The Foxes' Tim Listwak fell on the football and the hosts had a quick 10-0 lead.

"I thought that snap could have been handled, but Cole had trouble with it,"said Butler coach Jeff McAnallen said. "I was hoping he'd just kick the ball out of the end zone and take a safety there."

Butler had to punt from inside its own 20 on its next possession as well, giving Fox Chapel the ball on the Tornado 33-yard line. Sean Griffin scored on a 33-yard run on the Foxes' next snap. The PATwas botched, but the team had a 16-0 lead.

"Against just about any 0-2 team, a 10-0 lead early would have been enough,"Deal said. "We thought it was critical to score first in this game, just to get some confidence."

The Tornado responded, however, marching 73 yards in seven plays to get on the board. A 23-yard gain on a screen pass to Christos Klutinoty highlighted the drive, which was capped by Harvey throwing an 18-yard scoring pass to Mason McLaughlin.

Fox Chapel promptly drove inside Butler's 20, but Salerno was stopped short of the sticks on third-and-3 by Joey Marak and Tony Fudoli. Majerick's 32-yard field goal attempt was wide left.

A quarterback sack by Butler's Dayne Horwat forced a Fox Chapel punt late in the first half. Butler then drove 35 yards in eight plays, with Soule booting a 20-yard field goal with three seconds on the clock to pull the Tornado to within six.

Harvey threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jared Oesterling with 4:36 left in the third quarter, giving Butler its first lead of the season at 17-16.

The 45-yard drive was set up by a T.J. Lesniewski hit on Salerno, jarring the ball loose and enabling Butler teammate Josh Bartley to recover at the Foxes' 45-yard line.

Hartford's 32-yard catch keyed a 54-yard Fox Chapel drive to the go-ahead field goal, however.

"With seven minutes left, we should have driven down the field and won the game on our next possession,"McAnallen said.

Instead, Butler went three-and-out, as Harvey was sacked by Richie Silverman on third down, and the Tornado never got the ball back.

Fox Chapel took possession with 5:04 remaining and ran out the clock. Appearing set to go for the first down on fourth-and-1 from the Tornado 39 with two minutes left, the Foxes drew the defensive line offside, effectively ending the game.

McAnallen said he cautioned his team about jumping offsides during a timeout before that play.

"You have 15- and 16-year-old kids anxious to make a play, they're excited, and it just happened,"McAnallen said. "Everyone will point to that play because it happened at the end.

"We had plenty of other chances to win this game earlier and we didn't do it."

Notes: Fox Chapel mustered only five first downs in the first three quarters. The Foxes had six first downs in the fourth. ... McLaughlin had 92 yards in kick and punt returns and held standout Fox Chapel receiver Mike Carlino to one catch for seven yards.
