BUTLER TWP — Getting the ball in the hands of a speedy running back in open space makes perfect sense.

Butler did so last week, using its wide toss play to Cameron McDonald-Cahill for a 50-yard touchdown run and the Golden Tornado's first points of the 2007 football season.

Running outside with speed is effective. Running inside is a necessity for Butler to be effective, and the Tornado haven't been able to do that yet.

"We need to be able to run the football between the tackles to set up a lot of the things we want to do," Butler coach Jeff McAnallen said. "For us to win games, we have to sustain our blocks."

Fullback Christos Klutinoty had seven carries for 46 yards in last week's 35-7 loss at Norwin, but 29 of those yards came on consecutive runs late in the first half.

"Their defenders were playing back, guarding against the big play,"McAnallen said. "Our inside running game has not been effective to this point."

Butler (0-2), outscored 66-7 in its first two games, heads to winless Fox Chapel for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday. The Foxes have suffered losses of 18-7 to Highlands and 48-14 to Upper St. Clair.

But for the third consecutive week, the Tornado will face a team with a stellar wide receiver. Fox Chapel senior Mike Carlino had 38 catches for 532 yards last year and the 6-foot-6 target caught two TD passes last week against USC.

"It doesn't matter who you're playing in Quad-Afootball. You're going to run up against some great athletes,"McAnallen said. "Every opponent we play, Mason McLaughlin will guard their No. 1 receiver.

"We got good cornerback play out of Mason and Josh Reddick last week. We found a good combination there."

Norwin completed only four of 13 passes for 75 yards against the Tornado after Kiski Area's Josh Vick burned Butler for 265 yards passing in Week 1.

Faulty special teams play hurt Butler last week, setting up or resulting in three Norwin scores.

"We just got out of our assignment lanes a bit and we have to do a better job with that,"McAnallen said. "We'll work at it. Those problems are something we can work on and eliminate."

Butler did make a big play on special teams itself as Tony Fudoli recovered a Norwin fumbled punt to set up McDonald-Cahill's touchdown run.

McDonald-Cahill had 13 carries for 78 yards and was named the Butler Quarterback Club's Player of the Week.

Through two games, no Butler running back has 100 total yards. Klutinoty and McDonald-Cahill have 85 each while quarterback Cole Harvey has 76 yards rushing, including sacks.

Harvey has completed just eight of 22 passes for 47 yards thus far. Thirty of those yards came on one completion to Nathan Neff last week.

Defensively, Butler has not recorded an interception. Fudoli, Reddick and Eli Christy have fumble recoveries.

McAnallen expects Fox Chapel to bring the aerial game Friday.

"They do a lot of sets with no backs, using trips and sometimes four- or five-receiver sets,"the coach said. "They run a complex offense with schemes we haven't seen before. It's going to be challenging for our kids and for myself because I haven't coached against that program for a long time.

"Their skilled kids are seniors and they have a lot of juniors who started as sophomores. We have to play solid football on offense, defense and special teams if we expect to beat them."
