ADAMS TWP — Between long touchdown jaunts, Mars running back Billy Bair sat on the bench and lost his dinner.

Imagine how queasy Riverside must have felt watching him run.

Bair scored on carries of 17 and 75 yards in the second half to blow open a close game and to lead the Planets' football team to a 21-0 blanking of section-rival Riverside.

"When the going gets tough, that kid gets going," said Mars coach Scott Heinauer. "He's gonna get the ball. And he's the guy who sealed the victory tonight."

Bair carried the ball seven times for 57 yards on the opening drive as the Planets marched 88 yards on 13 plays to take an early lead.

AnthonyCiafre capped that drive with a 7-yard scoring run.

After that, the sledding got much tougher for Bair and Mars as Riverside's defense stiffened.

Last week, the Panthers gave up only 18 yards of offense and it appeared they had made the necessary adjustments to stop Bair and the Mars' running game.

But then Bair, digestive trouble and all, broke loose.

He found a seam and cut to his left, running untouched down the left sideline for a 17-yard score late in the third quarter.

It was the score Mars and Heinauer were desperately searching for since the opening drive.

"It was important to get that next one," Heinauer said.

But as good as Bair was on offense — he gained 183 yards on 25 carries and caught a key 28-yard pass to set up one of his scores — he was just as good on defense.

And so was Mars.

Riverside was supposed to be the vaunted defensive unit, but the Planets left as the king in that department.

Mars limited the Panthers (1-1) to 67 yards of total offense and a mere four first downs. The key to Riverside's offense, running back Jake Wickline, was held to 20 yards on 12 carries.

"I don't know how many yards he had, but our goal coming in was to stop him," Heinauer said. "He's a great player. They have a potent offense."

Riverside's longest play from scrimmage was 18 yards, and the Panthers had only three plays of more than 10 yards on the night.

"Our linebackers were excellent tonight," Heinauer said. "They were flying to the ball."

John Brake, the Planets' first-year starting quarterback, enjoyed his second straight solid game. He threw for 55 yards on 4-of-6 passing and rushed for 35 yards — many coming on quarterback sneaks.

Heinauer opened the passing game a little more for Brake, who threw a perfect downfield pass that slipped through his receiver's hands for one of his incompletions.

He hooked up with Ciafre three times for 27 yards.

The win gives Mars (2-0) an early stranglehold on the section.

"I'm very pleased," Heinauer said. "But this is just one step. But to beat a team like Riverside 21-0, I couldn't be happier."
