Children
In a world where children earn nothing and expect everything....where does discipline come into play? How can teachers set expectations when there is no follow through at home? If your child didn't do their homework or is receiving poor grades and you still let them go to "Johnny's house", football, dance, etc...then you are guilty. (I had a parent that wrote an excuse for homework not being done because there was a cheerleading clinic that night.) If you are buying CDs and video games with parental warnings...I don't even know what to say about that. (They bring them to school.) Does your child earn anything? Are there chores and responsibilities that they have? Are you doing your child's homework WITH them or FOR them? (I once tutored a little boy whose mother was taking an online class. When the mother was late getting home because she was at the mall, the grandmother logged on AS THE DAUGHTER, so that she wouldn't be punished for not being there. Great example for a young child.) Look at the role models that young children have. Ban the celebreties that don't stand for what is right. Don't buy their music, books, perfume, etc. Start standing up for what is right and making it clear to your children what you believe. Be a role model for what your children should stand for. Yes, we all make mistakes and no one is perfect. However, when there are little to no consequences for the poor choices that people make, what reason do your children have for not doing the same thing? In their minds, because it is not developmentally appropriate, they are not able to make these choices without influence. If their choices and decisions are made without YOUR influence, whose do you think they are using? And whose influence do you think is stronger? Physical discipline was a big part of the past but respect, honor, and consequences were much more important.
