Response to Jake
To some extent I disagree. I also grew up in a home where discipline was something I knew well but not by the hand or the roughness of my fathers belt. I knew what right and wrong meant because I was taught those morals. You can have authority over your children without beating it into them. My dad was very strict growing up with myself and 4 siblings. I don't ever remember a time where he had to raise his hand to any of us. We knew respect because we were taught it by the example of our parents. I can't tell you how many times I've seen children yelling at their mom or dad in stores, parents who party with their kids because they think it's better than them doing it behind their back, smoking and buying cigarettes for kids because they think it's better than pot. We have a decaying society and the responsibility lies with the adults. I believe in the hope for a brighter future and that future can only come from leaders and community members who demonstrate good policy. Parents need to be more involved in what is going on with their kids. The children need to learn respect. Not until we see that respect return will we see a major change in what is happening to this world.
