SLIPPERY ROCK— The Slippery Rock Sliders and Chillicothe Paints exchanged shutouts over the weekend in Frontier League baseball action at Critchfield Park.
Left-hander Zack Cline tossed a five-hitter Saturday night as the Sliders (21-54) posted a 3-0 victory.
Casey Bowling and Slippery Rock product Jason Curry homered for the Sliders. Cline posted his seventh win of the campaign — marking one third of the team's total wins.
Chillicothe (37-39) loaded the bases against Cline in the sixth inning, but Cline struck out Jon Poterson to get out of the jam.
The Paints evened the score Sunday by scoring a 4-0 victory behind a six-hitter by Perry Cunningham (8-4). Bernie Dennis had a pair of singles for the Sliders.
Lance Koenig doubled and singled for Chillicothe, which had every player in its starting lineup collect a hit. Dan Schwartz (1-4) took the loss for Slippery Rock.
The Sliders are off tonight before opening a three-game series at Gateway (Ill.) Tuesday night.
LODDEKOPINGE, Sweden — Catriona Matthew won the Scandinavian TPC on Sunday, shooting a 4-under 68 to beat Laura Diaz and Sophie Gustafson by three shots.Matthew finished with a 9-under 279 for her fifth victory.Matthew had birdies on four of the first five holes to take a 5-shot lead.Gustafson (68) and Diaz (68) tied for second place at 6-under, and Maria Hjorth (70) tied for fourth at 4-under with LPGA Championship winner Suzann Pettersen (71).
MONTREAL — Novak Djokovic upset world No. 1 Roger Federer 7-6 (2), 2-6, 7-6 (2) Sunday to win the $2.45 million Masters Series event, solidifying himself as a serious contender to win the U.S. Open beginning later this month in New York.It was third-seeded Djokovic's fourth tournament win this year and his first win in five career matches against Federer, whose 16-match Rogers Cup winning streak ended. The Swiss star won the tournament in 2004 and 2006, and sat out in 2005 with a foot injury.
ORLANDO, Fla. — Adam "Pacman" Jones ended up surrounded by police Sunday night. This time they were actors trying to help the suspended cornerback, though they couldn't stop him from being allegedly "attacked."Not a finger was laid on Jones on-camera Sunday at the Total Nonstop Action Wrestling event, but several were awfully close. A wrestler rushed the stage after jawing with Jones, but four actors with police clothing tackled him just out of reach.Minutes later, the studio television screens flashed to Jones backstage, lying on the ground after being purportedly attacked.
CHICAGO — Forward Abby Wambach and midfielder Carli Lloyd each scored twice as the U.S. women ripped New Zealand 6-1 Sunday at Soldier Field in their next-to-last tuneup before next month's women's World Cup in China.Wambach scored the game's first and final goals and moved into fifth place among U.S. women with 77 career goals.The Americans, now 5-0 in a six-game pre-World Cup tour, had 10 first-half shots while opening a 3-0 lead.
