Air Force Reserve Master Sgt.
Duane Oesterling has retired from the Air Force Reserve after 21 years of service.Prior to retiring, he was the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration superintendent for the 911th Civil Engineer Squadron at the Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station, Coraopolis.Oesterling entered the Air Force on active duty in March 1986, completed basic military training and was assigned to McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., until November 1989. His next assignment was to Rhein Main Air Base, Germany, where he served in support of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield. The sergeant then was assigned to Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., until he separated from active duty in April 1985.He enlisted in the Air Force Reserve as a traditional reservist and cross-trained into the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration career field assigned to 911th Civil Engineer Squadron, where he served until he retired.Some of his major awards and decorations include the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with one device, four Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with one device, three Air Force Achievement Medals, the Air Force Commendation Medal, three Air Force Good Conduct Medals and numerous other military service ribbons.The 1985, graduate of Butler High School is the son of the late Helen Oesterling, who died July 26, and the late Gerald Oesterling, who also retired from the Air Force.His wife, Shelley, is the daughter of Sonny and Shirley Cousins of Butler.Oesterling and his wife have two children.
