NEW YORK — Tom Moses, son of Merril Moses, owner of Moses Jewelers in Butler and the Clearview Mall, has been named the winner of the eighth annual American Gem Society Triple Zero Award in the industry category.

Tom Moses is a senior vice president of the Gemological Institute of America.

The award is named for AGS's highest diamond quality grade and is given to an individual with a commitment to education as well as leadership in gemology.

At GIA, Moses has helped to define the institute's gem identification and research processes and has conducted studies of synthetic diamonds, as well as Chinese freshwater pearls and other gems.

He oversees institute operations worldwide.

SUMMIT TWP — Bioptechs on Beck Road celebrated 15 years of business on July 1.Bioptechs develops and manufactures scientific instruments used to study the behavior of live cells by microscope.The company began production in a garage in 1992 and moved to its current location in 1994.Customers include universities, pharmaceutical companies and government groups, such as the National Institute of Health, with 100 distributors worldwide, including Fisher Scientific.The company started with one employee, president Dan Focht. It has expanded to 13 workers.

ZELIENOPLE — The Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau was awarded a $5,000 state grant Thursday for the brochure display in its Grandview Avenue office.Bureau executive director Jack Cohen said the grant helps offset the $8,500 cost of the display.Designed by Getaways on Display of Manheim, Lancaster County, the display includes brochures for the county as well as other places around the region.It also includes a flat-screen television that is connected to the Internet, allowing visitors to get information about businesses and events.

PENN TWP — Marmon/Keystone, a wholesale distributor of tubular products based in Butler, recently had its annual Supplier Quality Day at the Butler Country Club.More than 120 multinational suppliers participated in the event where awards were presented to suppliers from the United States and Canada.The guest speaker was Daniel Pryor of the Carlyle Group, who discussed private equity and the steel business.

<B>Charles Parker,</B> a senior associate with Burt Hill, a Butler-based architectural firm, has been appointed co-chairman of the American Institute of Architects-Master Builders' Association Joint Committee.———<B>Jim Greene</B> has been promoted to director of information technology at St. Barnabas Health System in Gibsonia. He joined St. Barnabas in 2000. He lives in Bethel Park with his wife, Joan, and their two daughters.
